Cancelled Gym Membership
I was really only fooling myself… and throwing away $30 a month. I bought a gym membership about a year ago to LA Fitness. $100 to start, and then monthly dues of $30. Not a bad deal, considering it was a brand new gym and only about 3 miles from my house. In the beginning, I went a few times a week. I was determined to get into shape. Then, as time went by, I could only make it once or twice a week, then every other week and it deteriorated from there. Pretty soon, I was paying $30 for one gym visit a month.
Then, in September, I got a new job, and moved closer to work. I was finally out on my own. The best part was that there was another LA Fitness only 1 mile from my new apartment! I had grand plans to get back into shape. That was 5 months ago, and I haven’t been to the gym since. The first month, it was, “I’m still adjusting to my new work schedule,” then the holidays came and I was too busy, and now here we are today, 5 months of wated dues later, and I haven’t even been inside my new gym.
I finally decided over the weekend it was time to stop kidding myself. I called up LA Fitness and asked them to cancel my membership. At first they told me I had to fill out a form and mail it into their corporate office, but I was persistant, called the corporate office myself, and found somebody who would cancel over the phone. March will by my last month at the gym (they require a 30-day notice to cancel), and I already paid the last month’s dues with my $100 initiation fee. Therefore, February will be my last month paying dues, so I’ll save 10 months X $30 or $300 this year in unused gym fees.
